Helping a parent move out of a family home is one of the hardest moves there is. There are decades of belongings, strong memories and often a deadline set by a senior community or a home sale. A calm plan and a patient pace make the move easier for everyone.
Start with a conversation
Talk with your parent early about the move, the new space and what matters most to them. Let them lead decisions about their belongings where they can. Feeling in control makes the change easier to accept.
Know the new space
Get a floor plan of the new apartment or room and measure it. It is much easier to decide what to bring when you know exactly where each piece of furniture will go. Many senior communities in Pittsford, Brighton, Penfield and Greece can provide floor plans.
Sort in small sessions
Sorting a whole house at once is exhausting. Work one room, or even one closet, at a time, in short sessions. Use four groups: keep, give to family, donate and discard. Start with rooms that hold fewer memories, such as the garage or a guest room.
Handle keepsakes with care
Photos, letters and heirlooms deserve extra time. Consider scanning photos, sharing heirlooms with family now, and choosing a few favorite pieces to display in the new home. These familiar things help a new place feel like home.
Plan move day around your parent
- Choose a time of day when your parent has the most energy
- Have a family member stay with them during the busiest part of the move
- Set up the bedroom first so they can rest
- Hang familiar pictures and set out favorite things on day one
- Confirm move-in times and elevator rules with the community
Help from family far away
If family lives out of town, plan the move by phone and pick one person to be the point of contact for the movers. Good movers keep everyone updated and can meet a family member or your parent on move day.
Choose a patient moving crew
Look for movers who slow down, explain each step and treat furniture and keepsakes with care. Our senior moving service works with families and senior communities across Monroe County. If some items need careful packing, our packing services can handle the kitchen, china and fragile pieces.
